Verisign is moving the daily drop window for expired .com and .net domains, a small operational change that matters to registrars, drop-catching services and domain investors competing for names as they leave pending-delete status.

According to Domain Name Wire, the registry operator will shift the start of the drop to around 12:00 UTC beginning October 1. The publication notes that the drop had previously taken place in the evening UTC.

The timing change is most visible for customers who place backorders with drop-catching platforms. A noon UTC start means early-morning deadlines in the United States: 5:00 a.m. Pacific during daylight saving time, 4:00 a.m. Pacific during standard time, and 8:00/7:00 a.m. Eastern respectively.

For hosting companies and agencies that monitor expiring domains for clients, the practical takeaway is simple: review any automated watch lists, backorder reminders and handoff procedures before October 1. Services cited by Domain Name Wire recommend submitting backorders ahead of the drop window, so operational slack will matter more once the schedule changes.

The change does not alter DNS resolution or active domain renewals, but it does adjust one of the industry’s most time-sensitive workflows: the moment deleted names become available for re-registration.
